River Oaks Opening: Members Edition

The River Oaks Theatre after being silent since March of 2021 is preparing to once again serve the community of cinema mavens at large.

A membership exclusive opening will kick off on the evening of Saturday May 18.

Formerly run by Landmark Theatres the River Oaks, a single screen theater with a balcony originally opened on Tuesday, November 28, 1939.

‘Hit Man’ advance preview screening + Sneak Preview of the renovated River Oaks Theatre + Meet and Greet with Richard Linklater + Private Dinner.

Tickets are $250. Plus a membership to the Friends of River Oaks, which range from $30 a month and up depending on the level of sponsorship.

Over the years the River Oaks became  a symbol for both the 77098 and 77006 zip codes as a go-to place but also as a legitimately cool place to see a movie for anybody on the planet.

I don’t want to even bring up the early-80s when the free brewed tea in the lobby was known to include stems of Mary Jane. There was a down period in the late ‘90s where Landmark just let the establishment decay. The projector was constantly out of focus for months on end. I recall a screening of Angels and Insects where in the penultimate moment to the cock reveal shot the screen went fuzzy.

The new management proposes a unique way to serve food and provide comfortable seating with unobstructed views in every direction. The previous space has been gutted and rebuilt with a new design

“Hit Man” premiered to acclaim at film festivals and will premiere on Netflix on May 24.

Linklater’s latest film was co-written with Glen Powell who stars as the titular character. Powell has worked with Linklater previously most notably in Everybody Wants Some!!

The space has so many memories and the enclosed space is about the see a new-millennium renaissance.

After a walk through of the in-progess space – and some areas may require hardhats – the film will screen in the main auditorium. This will be followed by a full scale dinner. The theater after all is part of a restaurant theater syndicate and when the establishment opens full time there will be food available to patrons of the silver screen at the River Oaks.
