Top films of 2022

Opinion or fact: no one person compiling a yearly top ten film list has seen every single film from that year.

A fellow member of the Houston Film Critics Society has compiled a list for our yearly awards ceremony and it contains a whopping 990 titles of films released in 2022.

A cursory glance at the spreadsheet revealed at least two titles missing.

During my halcyon days as a film critic for Public News in the 1990s I would list my top 100 films for each year and when you think about it that’s a good indication of the top twenty percent of movies for any given year.

Perhaps not oddly at the same time, the local cool cocktail lounge Marfreless had a manager that would post his Top 100 Films of the Year on a scroll. There was no collaboration between these lists yet it confirms that great minds think alike. What is best one day is constantly being reappraised.

The best case for reassessment for a movie over the last approximate two decades would be “The Big Lebowski.” A total underachiever upon release and now a film everyone on the planet can quote.

How will the films of 2022 age when the year 2044 rolls around?

Below are three top ten lists for domestic, foreign, and documentary. Yet it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Where will the list of blow-your-mind performances that were given by the likes of Brandon Frasier in “The Whale” or Andrea Riseborough in “To Leslie” be posted?

When will an award for best use of a song already written but used in a contemporary film be given if only to heap accolades on the cover of “Glide” performed in “After Yang” by Japanese rock singer Mitski? The song originally was performed by the fictional band Lily Chou Chou and heard in the 2001 Japanese film “All About Lily Chou Chou.”

When will cell phones in theaters be outlawed? And if so will only outlaws have cell phones in theaters?

Will High Frame Rate (HFR) ever become standardized to the point that home entertainment units are equipped with variable HFR knobs?

The answers to these and many more questions can only be answered by taking a deep dive into the cinematic experience.
