Whatcha gonna do?

Sony Pictures will never go broke underestimating the taste of the moviegoing public.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die moves with a distinct rhythm that’s different and somewhat less impressive than the Michael Bay Bad Boys films.

Bay’s Bad Boys II is one of the best action films of recent decades, and even though it fits in nicely with ’90s-era actioners it actually came out in 2003.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah still use the defining Bay circular shot around the titular heroes but mix in jump cuts and a mixture of regular motion that goes to slow-motion for emotional emphasis. Frankly that last technique is more of a Zach Snyder thing than a Bay thing.

There’s a law of declining quality to endless sequels from once popular hit movies. It happened with The Thin Man, it happened with The Fast and Furious, and heaven only knows how the clusterfuck of Lethal Weapon Five will end up.

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence double down on the laugh quotient. Lawrence has a heart attack at the beginning so when he recovers he doesn’t think he can be killed. He also thinks he has insight into his transmigration pedigree and is convinced that in a past life Smith was his donkey and he was the cruel master. You have to feel that some laughs were left on the table by not having Smith give an opponent a pure and easy bitch slap.

The plot is simple: the Bad Boys have been framed as being on the payroll of a drug cartel and every law enforcement agency is on their trail not to mention every gangbanger hoping to garner an underground $5M reward on their head.

For an average action film there are two scenes that are above the norm and pay off. One involves a supporting character who is seen in remote video cameras fending off a brutal cartel attack on his family homestead.

The best thing that could happen would be for Bad Boys: Ride or Die to become the biggest hit of the summer so Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah would have the clout to get their Batgirl film released from Warner Brothers purgatory.
